Daytona 500 qualifying

The 2017 NASCAR season is about to get underway, with the first sounds of the race cars hitting the track this weekend. With NASCAR announcing a new charter teams system, qualifying for the Daytona 500 and the rest of the races this year will look slightly different.

For the Daytona 500 the 36 Charter teams all receive a spot in the big race with four open, or non-Charter, teams filling the 40-car field. Those four spots will be based on the results of the two Can-Am Duel events scheduled for the Thursday before the big race. Unlike in past seasons that had a maximum 43-car field  for races including Daytona, this year’s maximum field has now been set at 40 cars.

As long as the weather holds up and both Duel events are run, then the two winners of the Can-AM Duel races earn a starting spot in the Daytona 500. The other two spots will be based on the Coors Light Pole Qualifying standings. The top two open drivers not already qualified for the Daytona 500 through either qualifying or the Can-AM Duel results will be added to the field.

Qualifying will only set the front row positions through group qualifying, which was implemented before the 2015 season. The Can-AM Duel results will then set how the order of the field fills out.

The big race’s qualifying event will be aired on FOX and online for those not able to watch on television. Time to get ready for the start of FOX’s 2016 NASCAR coverage.
